Bloody Blast From Halloween Past

Halloween, 2008

Popping off somewhere between ultimate party and full scale riot, the Halloween 2008 heavy metal/blood wrestling party was a smash! Bikini-clad women wrestling in a pool of red corn syrup for a cash purse of $300, with black metal and punk bands blasting live all night.

I'm attempting to run sound. Matt Muscle's new band, TireFire, hits the stage and mayhem ensues. Violence spills out of the ring throughout the venue. Gutterpunks acting like drunken apes! Chicks sucker punching chicks! Chicks beating up dudes! Todd the carpenter is wasted, feeling up bloody chicks, falling into the sound board, attempting to choke random people. Some giant with a mohawk looks like he's about to kill him. I intervene by attempting to wrestle Todd into the blood pit, but I just end up tipping him over like a telephone pole. Todd has one leg. The band stops.

Muscle jumps off the stage, screaming, What the fuck are you doing??? That's my boss!! HE HAS ONE LEG!!

Everyone's starting to go nuts.

Another chick fight breaks out between our friend Stevie and some gutterpunk. I crank the Dead Kennedys, Halloween, over the sound system.

Outside, despondent gutterpunks are protesting the whopping 3 dollar cover at the door. Threats are made. Poggi, Jumbo, Muscle,
Benny, and I square off against at least twenty homeless kids with facial tattoos and poor hygiene. Some crusty is trying to call out Benny by calling him a preppy and pounding his chest like an ape. Poggi's roach coach serves tacos to the gathering spectators.

Everyone is talking shit.

Jay Poggi: Have you ever been stuffed into a soup can?

Gutterpunk: No. Why?

Jay Poggi: Cuz I can show you what it feels like. Look, there's a can right there!

Gutterpunk: (looks down, sees nothing) There's nothing there.

Jay Poggi
: Exactly.

Matt Muscle: Just leave. Go do laundry.

Gutterpunk: I'm not from here, I'm from the hood

Me: Little Red Riding Hood or Kevin Costner's Robin Hood?

Gutterpunk: There's 20 of us, and only 6 of you!

Benny: You better get 30.

We corral the stupid punks and their dogs with backpacks right on down the block, back to the gutter, and out of our hair. Barghest from Baton Rouge brought the black metal. TireFire were impressively evil-sounding. My band slayed. Evil Army slayed.

What did you do for Halloween?

Living In The Bubble Of Zardoz; The Life Aquatic with Ian Svenonius

I am a shitty blogger. If my blog were a pet it would have died a horrific death by now, attributed to some type of bacterial atrophy eating itself to death from the inside, dehydrated. And you would have seen me on Animal Planet getting my ass kicked by Rop Vasquez on his new show where he beats animal abusers senseless in cage matches. That show is gonna rule.

That said, last February, 20th Century subterfuge guru and provocateur of guerrilla-pop, Ian Svenonius, Sassy Magazine's "Sassiest Boy in America-1991", took a Bruise Cruise, and this read, lifted from the online desk of Jonathan L. Fischer at Washington Dc's City Paper, is a hoot by any lost soul's standards. An informed mind will recognize the spark of genius in the words that flow from the mind of Svenonius. I hope the man gets down to writing a book one of these days.

Fear And Loathing In Saigon

"The devotion of the greatest is to encounter risk and danger, and play dice for death." ~Friedrich Nietzsche

It's been quite a year, but I'm not making any more excuses for why I haven't been updating this blog. It is what it is, so here you go, the first blog entry of the decade for Post Traumatic Sound Disorder, and it's not about black metal, punk rock, or french Pop.

"Gonzo" journalist, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005), the man who lived and wrote, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, was more than just a brilliant writer and comic-genius with a superhuman tolerance for drugs. In, The Gonzo Tapes: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, his compelling first hand accounts of events that occurred during, in, and around the evacuation of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam war remind us of his important contributions as a journalist, and historian.

In the face of uncertain danger, and a political climate at it's boiling point, Thompson reveals himself to be a man without fear, guided by a sense of purpose. His perspective is logical and his composure is calm. The Gonzo King Of Cool.

"I've been pushing it for awhile... about 10 years now... 15, or 20 and, I'm not looking for the end, but, I'm not that worried about it either. I've had a good time, and... I've made a few points. I don't know if that really justifies doing... kill-crazy things, or suicidal things. If I really thought it was suicidal, I wouldn't go back in. But, the fact is that it's... not safe. There are a lot of people who know the situation better than I do, would call it suicidal. They've all left and admitted they didn't want any part of a suicide orgy. I don't think many of the people over there do, though I'd say there's an easy 10 or 20 percent, who welcome it for reasons their own. I don't know those reasons. I sort of like my life, and enjoy it. But I've come this far, and it's my story, and I blew the last one over in Africa, and I think... it all has relevance to me. Which means going right back into the eye of the storm. And it will be a storm, we don't have much doubt about that."

Released in concurrence with the Magnolia Pictures film release of, Gonzo:The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, directed by Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney, Gonzo Tapes is a fascinating treasure trove of insight for fans of Hunter S. Thompson and basically the raw data, the genesis, for all his most important works.

Based on a prediction that Ford's speech is going to be so rudely received in Saigon.Mp3

And if the worst happens, well, it just happens.Mp3

Black Metal doesn't have anything to do with the world like you know it.

The headliners of the KINGS OF BLACK METAL Festival 2009 in Giessen, Germany, and Norway's INFERNO festival, are Sweden's Watain. According to the bio on their My Space page, "Watain performs Black Metal in it's original form; dangerous, passionate, sinister and magical. Drenched in blood, swept in mystery, shunning no sacrifice. You have been warned." Vocalist and bass player, Erik Danielsson, proclaims, "the Black Metal we want to inspire people to produce, if any, must be built upon the pillars of chaos, madness, lawlessness and boundless darkness! Fuck the world and its futile currents, and let’s make art that is timeless and world-less!" and the band succeeds in their mission. The darkness and the power in Watain's sound is magic to behold. Listening to the songs on 2007's landmark, Sworn To The Dark, you can't shake the feeling that this band is tapped into some supernatural phenomena.

"I believe that black and death metal originally comes from a place that very few of the people involved in this kind of artform know about or have been intentionally in contact with, and some bands along the way during the 20 years that this form of music has existed have been in touch with that place, or whatever you want to call it, and, we are one of them. And we have found ways to communicate with that place and that is what makes our music other worldly."~Erik Danielsson, Watain, Metal Show podcast interview.

Death Crisis

TOTD 01
6 song self titled debut 7"
Too Old To Die Records

Six songs that clock in at just under eight minutes. This is the envelope of hardcore punk pushed in a direction of pandemoneous hooks, rhythms, and growls, that Death Crisis command with authority and contempt. Manic, jet-speed riffs and beats take you by surprise, leaping at you like a rock and roll exorcism, hammering your skull, and pumping you with adrenalin. When it's over, you feel exhilherated and want more.
It's no surprise this band hails from San Diego with a ridiculously noteworthy pedigree consisting of former members of Life Crisis, Los Kagados, Chicken Farm, and The Rabbits (to mention just a few). After years in the game, the members of Death Crisis have obviously concluded that the only direction to go with their sound is straight into the fire. Screaming over the bedlam is the commanding voice of Alberto Jurado. His animated vocal delivery is rabid and melodic, carried with urgent ferocity like some insane mexican soldier in a cinematic bloodbath.
There is also a heroic element to his persona that shines in the momentary calm between songs throughout the band's 16 minute live set, as demonstrated in his oratory prelude to the song, "Broken Spirit", in which he reminds the audience that no matter how self-destructive our lives can become, that each of us has the ability to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off, as long as we believe in ourselves, as he points out, "Remember, you are all gods." In Spanglish, Jurado spews socio-political venom with conviction, warmth, and tongue-in-cheek delivery. His character shifts effortlessly from sage to madman to comedian. It's this honesty and authority in his presentation, coupled with the voice of an all-time great punk singer, that seals the deal with Death Crisis and demonstrates to the audience the undeniable truth that they are in the presense of masters.
Death Crisis encourages the sharing of these six songs I've ripped from vinyl for your listening pleasure. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Metallica.

I've worked very hard for a very long time to try to make something that is beautiful enough so that I can enjoy it, and other people can enjoy it

"The thing is to find a truth which is true for me, to find the idea for which I can live and die." -Søren Kierkegaard 1835

I came across this short video from Scottish prog-rockers, Mogwai (thank you, Laurie), in which they pay homage to Iggy Pop, splicing a haunting instrumental song with the highlights of an interview conducted with Iggy on a Canadian talk show in 1977. I found it very moving.

Here is the interview in it's entirety;
http://archives.cbc.ca/programs/15-2806/

"I've worked very hard for a very long time to try to make something that is beautiful enough so that I can enjoy it, and other people can enjoy it., and I will continue working at it, because I haven't achieved it yet."-Iggy Pop

It should please you all to take eight minutes of your day and take in what Iggy had to say about "punk rock". He delivers a very heartfelt, poignant elucidation on what it means to be guided by a manic devotion to an energy that affects us so deeply that all we can do is give back to it everything we've got, without compromise, in our endless thirst to create something beautiful and share it with the world.

And here's an equally poignant ode to rock and roll's powerful spell by the almighty Flipper.

The Lights, The Sound, The Rhythm, and The Noise
(from Flipper "Blowin' Chunks" 1983)

The lights and the sound
And the rhythm and the noise
Hit my body like a thousand dances

Everyone knows
Where nothing is something
And our lives flash
Before our very eyes

Cause the lights and the sound
And the rhythm and the noise
Hit my body like a million years

Forever lost
Where the night meets day
And everyone thinks
That they know the proper way

A HANGING

I almost let this blog wither away, filed under LOST INSPIRATIONS and INCOMPLETE ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS. It started when my file host, who had boasted to me once about his "virtually unlimited bandwidth" suddenly pulled the plug on access to my hosted uploads, essentially derailing a years worth of tedious construction of PTSD. It was just the kind of shit luck that left me aggravated and found me without the motivation to keep the ball rolling. The only brief moment of blogspiration I've had in this period of inactivity was my homage to Kim Wilde. I really felt like I didn't want to continue PTSD without first going back and fixing all the defunct links from previous entries dating all the way back to my first posting, which took a backseat to my multitude of other interests and hobbies.

Well alot has happened between then and now, both with my own musical endeavors and my continued discovery of artists who are doing it right and compelling me to share my interests in them.

On that note, since last October, I have been playing bass in the New Orleans Punk-Power-Thrash quartet, A Hanging. There's no denying the band has been gaining impressive momentum in the Nola hardcore punk and metal curcuit, in just a few months time having shared stages with the likes of EYEHATEGOD, GOATWHORE, ZOROASTER, EVIL ARMY, DEADBIRD, RITUAL KILLER, HAARP, HAWG JAW, TIREFIRE, THE DEVIL AND THE SEA, FLESH PARADE, and SAINT VITUS.

In January we were filmed alongside Louisiana's heaviest bands for a feature length documentary about the thriving insurgence of heavy music in the south entitled, Slow Southern Steel. The next week we rented a van and headed up to Little Rock, ARK, the hometown of SSS producer "C-T", to play with his band, RWAKE.

In January we self-released our debut cd, "Food For Rats" and have since completely sold out of the first run of 1000.

A Hanging "Food For Rats"

A Hanging "Blood And Spit"

I created a youtube channel under the nom de guerre, Atomicdruid, and there you will find an extensive
video playlist of A Hanging live videos, as well as videos from my past bands, Battalion Of Saints and The Tori Cobras.

Much more to come I promise.

Kim Wilde

A perusal of links to bands associated with providence hardcore legends, DROPDEAD, eventually led me to the myspace profile for Kim Wilde. I was 12 years old when I bought her platinum debut known for the smash-hit, "Kids In America", a joint composure by her brother, Ricky, and father, Marty Wilde. Kim Wilde could quite possibly have been the catalyst for the growth of hair on my balls In those restless nights of post adolescence, her uber-sweet voice would lull me to sleep from the turntable and I would dream of Kim, Debbie Harry, and Joan Jett engaged in a rock n' roll catfight for my affection.
Kim, who resides in London with her husband and their two children, still has a knack for making perfect pop songs and you can listen to her current work at her MySpace page.

Hearing "Kids" again on this youtube clip literally sent goosebumps up my back. Enjoy.

Pop Ear Infection

Even though "pop" is such an ambiguous term, marred by the stigma of it's association with commercialized music, I must admit that I am a sucker for a good pop song. Avril Lavigne is a "pop" singer, and she's horrible. Complete rubbish. But then, there's that London Bridges tune by Fergie that I can't get out of my head. Commercial "pop" music permeates our society at every turn and lulls the insipid consumer with it's homogenized hooks and melodies. Like television, Top 40 pop music has a tranquilizing effect on the public. It is the exact opposite of food for thought.

DON'T THINK! (Rock and Roll, Man!)

But that's that other pop music. Not at all like the melodic zeal of a song like, Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio? by The Ramones, or the lily-white melodies of The Cardigans. The kind of pop music I'm hooked on is pure, catchy, and un-pretentious. At times, it is the stuff of guilty pleasures. Yes, sometimes these simple songs are so perfect in their formulae that their appeal crosses over to the mainstream, and they truly become popular. It's inevitable, and no matter how betrayed we feel when the little groups we adore break free from the underground, secretly we can't help but root for them in the hopes that one day they might tip the balance of the popular music's vapid state in favor of music with spirit and originality. But seriously, FUCK THE RADIO, and have a taste of the candy my ears have been sucking on;

Notes From The French Quarter

Once again it's been awhile since I've posted anything. I was in a living situation that wasn't condusive to the kind of relaxed environment I require to work on this thing. But I'm in my own apartment now in the french quarter and I'm happy to be relaxed here and sharing some sounds I'm digging.

The Sess, Agendumb
Single Screen Records

Holy shit this is one powerful work. These guys are not pulling any punches and have given us an album that is a rollercoaster ride of aurally delicious garage hooks, technical twists and turns. This is rock and roll as a weapon. The guitar and bass melodies are jumping out my tiny desktop speakers like an army of bees and wasps. I cannot wait to hear this shit loud on a car stereo or on the sytem at the club. I imagine it sounding like The Who at Pearl Harbor. If the world doesn't blow up in 2012, this record could go down in history as one of the best punk records ever.

The King Khan & BBQ Show

The King Khan & BBQ Show consists of former Spaceshits, Mark Sultan (of Montreal, Quebec)and King Khan (of Berlin, Germany). They play soulful, unpretentious, humorous, romantic, low-fi garage rock and roll that harkens back to the good old days of boogie woogie rockabilly and punk. I could try and go off on a tangent about them but I really don't have much to write other than they're awesome and I'd like to share their awesomeness with you. The Post Traumatic Sound Of Billy Druid's Atomic Gospel

Since the break up of the Tori Cobras in 2003 I have spent most of my time travelling around residing in different parts of the United States and even Mexico. With the constant flux in residency, finding people to play in a band with has been difficult, to say the least. In lieu of having a solid band I continued writing songs with my home recording gear and played all the instruments, guitar, drums, bass, vocals, keyboards, percussion, etc. myself. The result is Billy Druid's Atomic Gospel. Two of the Songs are covers, Rod Stewarts's Maggie May and three songs by the late, great, Cranford Nix Jr.,Pray For The End Of Time, Pawnshop, and Spiders and Snakes. These songs are demos that were recorded in every corner of the country over the last five years. Right click and hit "save target as".

Nola

Last spring when I was not digging living in New Hampshire and Boston I got a phone call from an old friend of mine that some know as MC Trachiotomy. He told me New Orleans needs me. I felt the call pulling me south and began planning my exodus. It took a few months of work and travel back and forth between New England and San Diego, but I made it happen. A few days before Halloween I packed everything I had in my Chevy Corsica and left Boston on a mission to find my new home. I ended up in New Orleans, the Magic City, the Big Easy, Chocolate City, the only place that makes sense.

The talent pool in New Orleans is very impressive. The sense of community and comraderie here amongst the musicians in the 9th Ward is tight and refreshing, From The Spellcaster Lodge on St Claude, Mr. Quintron makes some swampy, groovy noise with his organs and his drum buddies and his puppeteer gal, Miss Pussycat, is leading the pack of cutting edge puppeteers with her latest endevour, Trixie & The Tree Trunks. Ratty Scurvics is a genius and plays more instruments than most people and plays them very well. Scurvics collaberates with Jeff Mattson (Crash Worship) and J? (Sex Hunter, Blort) in The Microshards. EYEHATEGOD has been inactive as of late with various members busy touring with Down and Corrosion Of Conformity but I don't think they've called it a day yet. To keep busy during EYEHATEGOD's downtime, when he's not doing time, EHG frontman Michael IX Williams has been busting out some chunky hardcore with Hank Willaims III and Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Superjoint Ritual, Down) in Arson Anthem, and Outlaw Order. Flesh Parade are the local heroes of grindcore. They've been around forever but rarely play live. King Louie and His Rock and Roll (ex- Persuaders, Exploding Hearts, Cajun SS, and a shitload of other bands) is a one man band who has a song about how much he hates chinese crawfish. Check out his 4-man homage to Thin Lizzy, The Black Rose Band (with Julian from Sex Hunter, Detonations, Flesh Parade) if you like guitar solos. Bipolaroid plays some real sweet Syd Barrett influenced psychedelic guitar-pop. Guitar Lightnin' Lee plays some down and dirty delta blues. Riff For The Riff Raff play a wonderful blend of folk, dixie, and country. Die Rotzz are fucking lunatics, The Buoyant Sea is one man with an electric mandolin and a shitload of pedals. Loose Marbles is pure dixie and have a beautiful singer. Ratzinger are pretty ridiculous and kinda rad. Julian gave me his old band's cd and I really wish The Detonations were still around.

After 4 years of roaming the country looking for a true connection with a music scene I have finally have a sense of belonging, and I couldn't be happier any other place but here.

I've seen alot of great shows since my move. King Khan & BBQ Show at One-Eyed Jack's. Andre Williams at Voodoo Fest on his 70th birthday. Miss Kitty Lynn and Guitar Lightnin' Lee at the Pearl. Static Static (ex-members of Detonations, Red Aunts) at The Saturn Bar. Followed Evil Army and Jay Reatard around for about a week and ended up in Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest where we saw a rare performance by day one headliners Neurosis, Witchcraft (from Sweden), The Sword, Battalion Of Saints, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Against Me!, Lifetime, The Saviours and tons of other bands all weekend.

The Sword put on a pretty powerful show but let's talk about Neurosis. Neurosis fucking slayed. They were simply awesome. Absolutely mind blowing! They sounded like a bleeding, dying, planet earth. It was pure, sonic-lava-overflow. They've honed their multi-media assault into an epic experience. They played a wide selection of songs going all the way back to Souls At Zero and pretty much totally crushed. I watched a quadroplegic guy that was totally entranced by their show slowly force his way through the thousand-plus crowd and make his way to the very front where he received a lapdance from a pretty punk sprite for his efforts. It was beautiful. Afterwards, Muscle and I looked at eachother and asked, "What The Fuck was that???". Convinced nothing could parallel Neurosis's show, we stumbled into Beerland in downtown Austin and caught an epic, spaztic performance by Milwaukee's HOLY SHIT!, and they lived up to their name. Again we asked, "What the fuck was that???".

I joined MC Trachiotomy's Moments and played a party at Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat's Spellcaster Lounge. I've got a lineup in the works for my Billy Druid project. I'm playing with Chad Booth (ex-Cajun SS) and Matt Muscle in a reunited Mangina. Matt and I also have a band called Snowman with Andy Rotzz (Die Rotzz) and Jason Panzer (Persuaders) .

Here's a sample of what we've been cookin';

The Tumultuous Lives of The Cudas

The two journal entries below were lifted from the blog of Beehive and The Barracudas because this band rules and they crack me up and if you don't think this shit's funny then I don't know what I can do for you...

SELF IMPOSED EXILE

Hey fans and enemies of the Cuda's: I know some of you have been jonesing for some plastic soul music (live or new recorded tunes) but things have been are rough go for our dudes/lady this past year. Here's some info/explanation on their self imposed exile from the indie scene. After the cease and desist case with the Cock Ready ep, the Cuda's have been in a mental/artistic schizo-phrenia haze that has upended their radical approach to Southwest art noize. There dabblings with the SDPD and various county school boards has also limited there influence around the southwest. They have simply lost all sense of right and wrong because of others interpretations of their art. As most of you know, the Cuda's have never been ones to take themselves seriously but when others dub the 'terrorism' card on certain bandmembers....lives become exilic in nature...fear from the repurcussions of supporting causes that are no different than the principles of democratic humanism, etc, etc.....They have tried there best to get a show in SD...but to no avail. Apparently, the blackballing of bands that support social justice/amnesty/peace/drugs is rampant in California's last bastion of religio-conservatism. As you know, San Diego is one of the most militarized cities in the world therefore citizens of SD find themselves in a precarious situation. We are on the frontlines of a bogus immigration debate, not to mention the seriousness of a failed war policy (as if any war can be justified, right?). Let's keep both Republicrat's out next term. Rumor has it that Andy Flame will be running under the Movement for a Free America Party in next years El Cajon County School Board runoff. Dner is also actively recording tunes for various social justice movements (he even squeezed in a classic Clash cover "Know Your Rights" with nelly furtado and the dixie chicks). Traci Haze has been running a childrens' clinic for abused children. Commotion is also the co-director of a breakfast program in LA that feeds the homeless. Dirty is currently a juror in a highly classified priest-boychild rape case. The finishing touches are being mounted onto their next release "pure commotion" and should be out on swami records later this year. We'll keep you posted, gene the jean adams
